Emma Katharine Johnson
August 22 - Congrats to our friends Rob and Tammy on the birth of their twins Nathan and Lia! We're so excited for you guys!August 17 - Our little daredevil has learned to climb up the stairs - and she's pretty quick about it too! She continues to amaze us and prove that we can't take our eyes off her for a second! August 15 - We've had a bit of a rough week. Emma had her highest fever to date at 103 degrees. It all started late Monday with a fever of about 100 - when we'd give her Tylenol, she'd be OK for a few hours and then it would spike up again. This continued all day Tuesday and then on Wednesday at about 2:30 a.m., she woke up at 103 degrees. Very scary. Thank goodness kids are so resilient - she was on the mend yesterday and seems back to her normal self. I can definitely do without another fever like that for a long time! And I have to thank Grandma Cindy - she came up to help me on Wednesday and then stayed with Emma on Thursday so Keith and I could go to work and to the orientation at Emma's new daycare center. Emma will start transitioning into the new daycare center a week from Monday. I'm really excited about the place - it already seems so different from where she's at now. They assign a primary caregiver to each child, and at her age, the ratio is 4:1. So, she'll be in a classroom with 12 total kids, but 4 kids - all within a month or two of her age - will be in her "pod." Her primary caregiver happens to be the head teacher in her classroom and is working toward her master's degree in early child development. I'm thinking I could learn a few things from her! And, the funny thing is that Keith and I both thought she looks a bit like me, so maybe that will make Emma a bit more comfortable, we're hoping. I haven't read through all our materials yet, but this center does so many great things - the primary caregiver will write in a journal to Emma every week to tell her what her favorite things have been, what adventures she's had, etc. We will write in the journal on the weekends as well...what a great keepsake for Emma to read later! In addition, even though Emma has just learned to drink from a sippy cup (I say "drink" loosely since Emma will take in a bunch of water and spit a little bit of it out after each sip), they don't use them at this center. The kids learn to drink from regular cups right away, and they sit with their primary caregiver and the other kids in their pod for each meal which is served family style. Emma will start learning how to serve herself - pour drinks, use utensils, etc. right away. I can't wait to see her do these things - it will be so cute! Of course the center has told us that it will likely take several months before she's really adept at these things, but I'm amazed that they work so hard to teach her these things so early. They're also big on sign language (although Emma - hopefully! - will be talking soon and won't use it for too long) and they do lots of water play, which we know Emma will just love! All this, and it's actually cheaper than our current daycare because it's subsidized by my company - so Emma wins, and we win too! Uncle Erik is here for a visit through the weekend. I'm afraid he didn't get to see Emma at her best for the first few days, so I'm hoping the next couple days will be better. I'm sure she'll charm him by the end of his visit :-) Oh, and Emma had her first weekend (OK, really one night because I couldn't go away any longer than that) away from us. We went to Vegas last weekend to see Jerry Seinfeld do stand-up for Keith's birthday. Seinfeld was great - really funny! And Emma did wonderfully at Grandma and Grandpa's house. So, all in all, it was a nice little getaway! August 5 - Miss Emma is having what we think is separation anxiety these days. When we try to put her to bed at night (even after she's been sleeping/snoring for 15-20 minutes while we hold her), she starts crying before her head even hits the crib mattress, and then she will stand and scream until we come back. Supernanny and other shows like it will tell you not to go back into the room, but we're suckers, so we of course go back and then it takes 2-3 hours to get her to go to bed. But, she is getting more lovey-dovey too - Today, she wouldn't let me put her down once we got home from work/daycare, and even when I tried to interest her in a toy, she'd pick it up and crawl over to sit in my lap and play with it - so cute! Then, after I took her out of the bathtub tonight, we were both sitting on the floor and I was trying to dry her off when she started crawling/climbing up me and then threw her arms around my neck so I'd pick her up. I'll call it her first official hug! It was the absolute best thing ever! STORIESAugust 3 - Whoa! It's been quite a week. Last Sunday night, Grandma Cindy babysat while Keith and I went to the premiere of The Mummy. Now most people would probably think it was cool to walk the red carpet, but not me - I wouldn't call my trip down the carpet walking...it was more like running....continue story August 2 - Congratulations to Jeff and Meghann on the birth of Finnegan James yesterday! ...continue story July 29 - Yes, we rocked and rolled today, but we're all fine. Emma and I were at home because Em has a fever, and by the time I took her out of her high chair, it was over. Keith was at work and didn't seem phased by it either. Hopefully we won't feel any aftershocks (haven't felt any so far). ...continue story July 23 - Emma is doing lots of new things these days - she stands on her tippy-toes when she's trying to reach for things, she loves turning the water on and off in the bathtub and she'll let go of the furniture and try to stand if you coax her into doing it.But by far the best was when I was s ...continue story July 21 - Victory! Finally, Emma ate pieces of a banana and liked them - no gagging or anything this time! Yay! ...continue story July 20 - Emma loves to play in the water! We figured this would be the case because she loves her baths so much, and we were right! She has water play at daycare every now and again, and they've told us she's the only baby who truly splashes around. She also loves to pick the grass, throw it in ...continue story
